Everyone repeats the same line. America is energy independent. We produce more oil than we use. We export to the world.
And yet gas in California is over $6 a gallon.
Both things are true. That should bother you.
Here is the story nobody on the news bothers to finish.
The US pumps a ton of oil. The wrong ton. We pull light sweet crude out of Texas. Most US refineries, especially the ones feeding California, are built for heavy sour. So we sell what we make to the world, then buy back what we actually need from the Middle East and Venezuela. California imports about a third of its oil from the Middle East. The last Middle East tanker just docked in California. Read that carefully. The fourth largest economy on the planet just took its final shipment.
You might ask the obvious question. Why not just send Texas oil to California? Because the Rocky Mountains exist. There is no pipeline. There will not be one. Geography wins.
Now the bigger reframe. Oil is not priced where it is pumped. Oil is priced where it is bid. Europe makes almost no oil. Europe still needs oil. So Europe bids the price up. Oil companies are private. They sell to whoever pays the most. That is not greed. That is a market. And 20% of the world's oil moves through one narrow channel called the Strait of Hormuz. The minute that channel gets tense, every gas station on earth feels it. Including yours.
So the headline is wrong. Or at least incomplete. America is production independent. America is not price independent. There is a difference, and that difference shows up on your debit card every Friday.
Here is where it actually hurts. Energy prices climb. Inflation climbs with them. The April CPI is expected to push year over year inflation from 3.3% to roughly 3.7%. Bond yields move. Mortgage rates move. Your monthly payment moves. The cost of carrying a car loan moves. The minimum payment on your credit card moves. One barrel of oil in the Persian Gulf quietly raises the cost of your American life.
You cannot fix the Strait of Hormuz. You cannot move the Rockies. You cannot tell Germany to stop bidding. None of that is your job.
Your job is smaller and more powerful. Know your numbers.
Most families do not. They guess at their budget. They have no idea what their credit score did this month. They could not tell you their actual net worth inside five thousand dollars. So every time the world hiccups, they get surprised. Surprise is expensive.
The families who come out of these cycles ahead are not smarter. They are not richer. They just track. Credit. Budget. Assets. In one place. Updated. Watched.
That is the entire game. The world will keep shaking. You decide whether you are watching or guessing.
